What Has This River Created?:Land and People Shaped by the Shinano–Chikuma River
July 23, 2026 – September 1, 2026

The Shinano–Chikuma River is Japan’s longest river and has formed the Echigo Plain. It erodes mountains, carries sediment, and creates vast lowlands, while also bringing floods and other natural hazards.
This exhibition introduces the formation of the region’s geology and landforms, as well as the relationship between the river and people, through a three-dimensional map recreating the river from its source to its mouth, riverbed gravels, and archaeological and historical disaster materials. As you trace the changes in the landscape shaped by the river, we invite you to explore its story.
During the exhibition period, a stamp rally connecting facilities of Niigata University with museums in Niigata Prefecture and institutions in Nagano Prefecture will also be held. We warmly encourage you to take part.
