【Ended】Discover and Experience the Art and Culture of Port Town Niigata Project

October 25, 2023 – November 26, 2023

“Discover and Experience the Art and Culture of Port Town Niigata Project” is a project led by Niigata University Asahimachi Museum to exhibit works of art that have taken root in Niigata City from early modern times to the present, in cooperation with neighboring institutions.

In the Edo period, Kitamae-bune (northern-bound ships) called at Niigata’s ports, and the city prospered as one of the leading port cities on the Sea of Japan side. The shipping agents and wealthy merchants became important promoters and patrons of culture, and many literary figures visited, and painters were active. Crafts such as lacquerware flourished, and a high quality of culture took root in the area. Although times have changed and the lifestyle of the Japanese people has changed, these traditions live on.

On the other hand, in recent years, as the population has moved away, old houses have been demolished and the calligraphy, paintings and handicrafts preserved there are being lost at an increasing rate. In this project, with the help of the citizens, we will discover such works that have been carefully handed down in the daily lives of the people of Niigata City and exhibit them in historic residences, buildings, a temple, and merchants’ houses in Asahimachi, Nishi-Ohata, Furumachi and Shimomachi. We hope that “the whole area will become a museum in itself” and that it will provide an opportunity to reflect on the transmission of art into the future. Please take this opportunity to rediscover the charm of the rich culture that has been nurtured, protected and passed on in the port town Niigata.

This project will include a special exhibition as well as symposiums and other related events.
